Experiential learning: the benefits in the learning procedure
John Dewey’s theory of “learning by doing,” introduced in the 1930s, is considered the beginning of experiential or empirical learning. According to this theory, it is the interaction of experience and the individual’s action that results in learning, not just the activity itself. Connecting teaching with reality makes learning attractive and interesting. The challenge of experiences contributes to more permanent learning and increases student engagement and involvement in the teaching process (Kassotakis, Flouris, 2006). The role of the teacher should be that of a coordinator, guide, and assistant. In an experiential activity, the teacher should not have a leading role but should hand over this role to the children and be the facilitator of the process, the “conductor.”
Some of the benefits of experiential learning are as follows:
- Assimilation of knowledge: Although it is given and self-evident, we will mention as a benefit the enrichment of knowledge and the easier, effortless assimilation of information.
- Improvement of teacher-student relationship: Through experiential activities, the teacher gives space to children to create and act independently, resulting in gaining their trust.
- Socialization: Children learn to cooperate, share, and get to know their classmates better through activities such as role-playing games and group research.
- Self-confidence and self-esteem: Children not only get to know their classmates better but also themselves. Active participation in activities helps them realize that they can achieve many things they didn’t believe they could and be accepted by the group.
- Empathy: During experiential activities, children often “put themselves in others’ shoes,” trying to show understanding towards others’ behavior and feelings.
- Imagination: Undoubtedly, the more stimuli children receive from the environment, the more their imagination is cultivated, which is essential for creativity, problem-solving, future adult happiness, and much more.
